The Importance of pH Balance

Healthy foodThe ketogenic diet is not a high protein diet, while you do need to consume adequate sources of protein to protect your muscle mass you must also consume adequate low glycaemic index carbohydrates (in the form of vegetables) and adequate healthy fats. In fact you might find yourself eating more vegetables during this program than you ever have!

The problem with fad high protein diets is that they are unsustainable long-term, don’t provide enough essential water soluble nutrients and fibre and do not result in the significant metabolic and cardiovascular health benefits that are associated with a well controlled and monitored ketogenic diet.

The other important factor to take into consideration is that if you have a high protein diet without counterbalancing with a high vegetable intake you may be causing disruption of the body’s delicate pH (acid/alkaline) balance.

Certain foods such as animal proteins are acid forming in the body, while vegetables and fruits are generally alkalizing. If you only eat protein and very few vegetables long-term you may disrupt your body’s delicate regulatory systems, which may lead to fluid retention, poor detoxification and mineral mobilization from bones and teeth.

It is imperative that you have more vegetables on your plate than proteins at every meal; this will ensure that you stay in healthy pH range. Not only will it help the body burn fat by providing extra nutrients it will keep you in perfect pH balance.
