Dining out

The girl chooses meal under the menu at restaurantPerhaps one of the biggest concerns that people have when changing their diet is how are they going to cope socially? Eating out is a big part of the Australian culture; nearly every major celebration revolves around food and drink. Never fear, you should be able to successfully navigate any menu and make keto-friendly choices with practice (and a bit of help from your waiter).

Ordering off the menu

The first rule of eating out is learning how to order off the menu. Some people are too embarrassed to ‘make a fuss’ and end up with a meal that contains lots of carbohydrates in one form or another and end up not eating half their dish.

Unfortunately allergies and intolerances are very common, so most venues (from the finest restaurant to the corner café or the fish and chip shop on the beach front) will have an option for you and if not most will make you one if you ask nicely. Don’t forget that special meals may take a little longer for the kitchen to prepare, so be patient.

Here are my top 5 tips for dining out
  • Explain that you have special dietary requirements and will need to order off the menu
  • Try to modify a dish that they are already cooking, for example scrambled eggs without toast and a hash brown but with a side serve of spinach and mushrooms instead
  • Ask for sauce and dressings on the side, or ask for oil and vinegar or lemon so you can dress your own food.
  • Be specific, ask how things are made and be especially careful with marinades, sauces and dressing – these nearly always contain some form of sugar.
  • Instead of starchy carbs such as rice, potatoes, pasta etc. ask for extra green vegetables – your body will thank you for it!
