Why Ketosis

Happy peopleThe Keto diet is very effective and will enable you to lose ½-2kg of body fat per week without feeling hungry. Many people have achieved greater fat loss than they ever thought possible using the Keto diet. These people have also maintained their muscle mass, which means they can maintain their weight loss long-term.

The Keto Diet

Increases fat burning
Reduces fat production
Maintains muscle mass
Increases energy

How long will it take me to get into Ketosis?

Everyone is different, some people find they fall into ketosis after 24 hours, while other people need up to three days. Once you are in Ketosis it is ideal if you can stay in ketosis and not break the diet, that way your body becomes used to operating on ketones (fat burning) instead of relying on carbohydrates.

What to expect during Ketosis

During the first few days of ketosis you may become a little tired, however, after three to four days most people experience greater energy and satisfaction. If you experience any unusual changes in your health talk to us as we may be able to easily correct any symptoms with nutritional support or by altering your program slightly.

How much fat will I lose on the Keto Diet?

Numerous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of Ketosis diets in weight loss. The following study is an excellent demonstration of the effect of carbohydrates on fat loss. This research study was done on a group of obese people (average weight 147.8 kg) who went on a ketogenic fat loss program. They lost on average 2 kg of fat per week each.

Figure 3 shows their average fat loss on this program was dramatic for the first eight weeks. Then, when they added in just a small amount of carbohydrate to their diet (equivalent to only three slices of bread per day), we can see that carbohydrate slowed fat burning. This study shows that a ketogenic diet quickly reduces fat in severely obese individuals. This also shows how a small amount of carbohydrates can dramatically reduce the rate and amount of fat loss.

What benefits are associated with the Ketogenic diet?

In a paper published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2013 summarised the beneficial effects of using a carefully controlled ketogenic diet.

Ketogenic diets have been in use since the 1920s as a therapy for epilepsy and can, in some cases, completely remove the need for medication. From the 1960’s onwards they have become widely known as one of the most common methods for obesity treatment. Recent work over the last decade or so has provided evidence of the therapeutic potential of ketogenic diets in many pathological conditions, such as diabetes, polycystic ovarian syndrome, acne, neurological diseases, cancer and the amelioration of respiratory and cardiovascular disease risk factors. The possibility that modifying food intake can be useful for reducing or eliminating pharmaceutical methods of treatment, which are often lifelong with significant side effects, calls for serious investigation.”
