DNA testing – the gold standard

DNA4How can DNA testing help me improve my health?

DNA testing provides comprehensive range of information about your unique genetic profile. Each one of us inherits a variety of polymorphisms (or variations) of different genes, this is what makes us all so unique!

The SmartDNA Nutrigenomic test investigates the genes that are involved in particular biological pathways which can be influenced by dietary and lifestyle modification. It provides detailed panels on both phase I and phase II liver detoxification pathways, methylation, oxidative stress and inflammation – all relevant to detoxification.

Genes are not your destiny – they represent your health potential; whether these gene polymorphisms are expressed partly depends on your diet and lifestyle choices you make now and in the future.

DNA provides you with information on several key areas of health:

  • Detoxification PathwaysHappy people
  • Inflammation
  • Oestrogen Metabolism
  • Methylation pathways
  • Cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Weight Management
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Sodium Sensitivity
  • Adrenal health
  • Stress Response
  • Sports Performance
  • Exercise Recovery
  • Coeliac Disease
  • Lactose Intolerance
  • Caffeine Metabolism
  • Essential Fatty Acids
  • CoQ10
  • Vitamin Pathways

Why would we recommend DNA testing?

There are many reasons to do a DNA test,  after all, it is the gold standard in personalised health information! However, in relation to detoxification specifically, DNA testing can provide us with important information about how well our body copes with everyday exposure to toxins and pollutants.

Hormone Metabolism

The phase I and phase II liver detoxification panels provide a wealth of information about how effectively your liver enzymes function and their potential ability to metabolise toxins and hormones. This can be particularly important if you have a problem with hormone metabolism or (have a family history of) any hormone related conditions such a fibroids, polyps, endometriosis, fibrocystic breasts, prostate or other breast problems, as these enzymes are particularly important for healthy hormone metabolism.

Preconception Detoxification

Undertaking a period of detoxification prior to conception is one of the best ways to prepare for pregnancy. Even if you don’t think you have been exposed to toxins in your lifetime, think again. We all store chemicals and toxins within our body which can potentially affect a developing baby. Clinical tests have repeatedly shown that Australian women excrete a range of chemicals in their breast milk including DDT (banned many years ago but still present in the environment) and other persistent organic pollutants. DNA testing of both partners not only helps to fine tune the detoxification process but also give information that can be useful to a growing family.

Toxin Exposure

DNA testing can also be very important for people who have developed multiple chemical sensitivities or for people who have had occupational or recreational exposure to toxins in the past. There are a range of occupations that may potentially expose people to toxins such as the automotive, mining, farming and manufacturing industries. Hobbies such that involve glues, solvents, oils, chemicals, fuels can put people at risk as can gardening at home.
